about

Zonetech is the collaboration between two familiar Squirrels, C.l.a.w.s. & Billy Bates. This digital only EP which was circulating among the Squirrels Crew like a secret handshake, is now available to everyone, mastered for digital using analog gear by Bay Area Industrial/Techno legend Mark Pistel.

Golden Hours is the sound of being stoned in the park on a beautiful Spring Day. The woozy pitch-shifted synthesizers are the cloudless blue sky to the fresh green grass of the quirky 808 drum patterns. If two stoners from Northern California who grew up playing in hardcore punk bands went back in time to record a track for the golden era of Warp Records it might sound like this.

Ruby Ridge fits nicely in the Squirrels sound-world, albeit with a generous dose of cough syrup. Slow motion boogie to soundtrack John Carpenter's Escape From The Caribbean. Its robotic voodoo is infectious enough for dancing, but the tempo is slow & sexy.

It gets slower & sleazier with The Suspect. In an alternate universe, this is a goth hyphy anthem, chopped & screwed to a lean so droopy it almost falls apart. A sideshow at the skatepark, its groove is loose and its dub is heavy. It's the kind of beat teenagers make banging their fists on the lunch table at school.

Finally there is Emerald Icebergs pt. 2. Angular jazz funk, as if Yellow Magic Orchestra wrote the music for a hidden level of the original Castlevania, with a breakdancing battle between vampire broods. The unique drum programing that defines the whole EP is especially on display here, never anything but completely funky, but never in a typical way. The Zonetech beats also never sit still, they are always pushing & pulling, and always on the verge of launching into the digital dub stratosphere.
